March 4: The Met: Live in HD - L'Elisir D'Amore at SJCT

The Met: Live in HD production of L'Elisir D'Amore will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2018 at San Juan Community Theatre in Friday Harbor.

Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met as the feisty Adina, opposite Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his ravishing “Una furtiva lagrima.” Bartlett Sher’s production is charming, with deft comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing. Domingo Hindoyan makes his company debut conducting.

Feb. 26: Bolshoi Ballet Only in Cinemas Romeo and Juliet at SJCT

Bolshoi Ballet Only in Cinemas presentation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will be shown on 7 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2018 at San Juan Community Theatre in Friday Harbor.

In Verona, Romeo and Juliet fall madly in love while their respective families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are caught in a bitter rivalry ending in heart-wrenching tragedy.

Alexei Ratmansky, former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, stages the company’s premiere of his production with dramatic urgency and a fresh retelling of Shakespeare’s beloved classic. His brilliant and detailed adaptation set to Prokofiev’s romantic and cinematic score reignites the story of literature’s most celebrated star-crossed lovers like no other classical ballet choreographer today.

March 3: Celebrate the Oscars at FH Film Fest Gala at Brickworks

Celebrate the Oscars with Friday Harbor Film Fest on March 3 at Brickworks. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Last year's celebration was sold out and people were turned away, so don't delay.

Friday Harbor Film Festival will be celebrating the Oscars by screening the Trailers of the Top Contenders for Best Picture and Best Documentary. Everyone is encouraged to select his or her winning choice, for great prizes. The Documentary with the most votes will be selected for the 2018 FHFF. Festivities will begin with wine and an appetizers reception, allowing lots of time to preview the great silent auction items; local products, services, art and jewelry. Dinner will follow while screening the trailers of the Oscar nominated films. Throughout the evening you will have the opportunity to bid on a Wonderful array of 12 Live Auction items. Getaways to Bellingham, Victoria and Yellow Island, a 3 day Cruise, Gourmet Dinners, Oyster Feed; just to name a few.

June 2 & 3: San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour

Plan a fabulous art weekend in the San Juan Islands June 2 and 3, 2018 and attend the  27th Annual San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour. Expect to find lots and lots of new studios for 2018 with 22 mutually supportive island art studios, more than 50 total artists, featuring glass blowing, etchings, handmade knives, kaleidoscopes, wearable art, fused glass and more. This will be the largest, most exciting and fun-filled island event yet.

May 12: UW Friday Harbor Labs Open House

University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories hosts its annual Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018. This free event offers a splendid opportunity to meet scientists and students at the Labs and check out the research and teaching facilities.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Labs will be open for self-guided tours. Scientists and students will showcase their marine science research, answer questions and provide demonstrations. There will be posters, marine plants and animals, microscopes, plankton sampling and observations, and activities for visitors of all ages. Families are particularly encouraged to attend.

Home Trust Feb. 10 fundraiser postponed; Raffle still a go

The San Juan Community Home Trust has postponed its “Have a Heart Pizza Paddle Raise” fundraiser, originally scheduled Saturday, February 10 at the San Juan Grange. It will be rescheduled at a later date.

Raffle tickets for the fun child’s battery-powered Tesla will still be available for $50 each at the Home Trust office, 435C Argyle. There are only 100 tickets available, so chances of winning it for that special child are excellent. The raffle drawing will take place as part of the celebration when two more classic homes from the Victoria/Oak Bay areas will be barged in to Jackson Beach some time in mid-March. Look for more bulletins as this date draws closer.

Islanders view eclipse - photos and video

Passengers on board the Tillikum ferry used a variety of methods to view the August 21 solar eclipse. The ferry crew had a few pairs of glasses for people to share. One woman brought a cardboard box she had rigged up as a pinhole projector. The image showed up on a piece of paper inside the box. Others projected the image onto the side of the ferry. One girl tried using a cheese grater. In town one man used a cracker with holes.
