Finding the gold egg in the age 7 to 11 area at Roche Harbor's Annual Easter Egg Hunt proved extra difficult on Sunday, April 1, 2018. The two youngest age groups found the gold and silver eggs in their gardens and were waiting to be awarded their prizes but the older kids were still scrambling. Even a hint that the egg was hidden in a specific corner of the pavilion's patio didn't help.
More than 600 islanders joined Friday Harbor High School and Middle School students in the local March for Our Lives (VIDEO) Saturday, March 24, 2018. After brief remarks by Friday Harbor Mayor Farhad Ghatan, the students spoke about the need for an end to the gun violence.
The annual Island Lights Festival took place this year on Friday, December 1 in Friday Harbor. The San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce partnered with Brickworks, the Whale Museum, Island Rec and the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild to provide a fun-filled evening for the whole family.
A generous crowd of party-goers celebrated at San Juan Community Theatre's annual Holiday Festival Saturday, December 2 in Friday Harbor. They perused the numerous items in the silent auction ranging from art work to Seattle Mariners tickets. After wine and appetizers, attendees moved into the Whittier Theatre and participated in the 20-item live auction.
The Sports Car Club of the San Juan Islands in conjunction with the Rotary Club of San Juan Island held the 11th annual Concours d’Elegance at the San Juan Vineyards on Sunday, August 27. Categories included German, American, Other Countries, Custom/Modified/Hot Rod, and Motorcycles.
A 1956 Chevrolet took top honors at the first Rick Campbell Memorial Hot Rod Show this past weekend in Friday Harbor. Appropriately, the cherry red and silver coupe was owned but the late car buff and auto repair and parts store owner. Following the Friday Harbor Fourth of July Parade, residents and visitors wandered up Spring Street to the San Juan Historical Museum on Price Street. The Kiwanis had organized their annual Pig War Picnic. Local band, The Chameleons played, kids and adults tossed eggs, contestants gobbled up donuts.
Friends of the San Juans and 15 other environmental protection groups joined together to put a spotlight on the plight of the Southern Resident Killer Whales. The groups' entry, The Orca Protectors, in the 2017 Friday Harbor Fourth of July parade included people carrying cutouts of whale fins. Each black one represented one of the members of J, K or L pods. Seven white cutouts stood for the orcas that died in the past year. The entry won the Judges Special Choice prize.

Turnout for the 2017 annual Memorial Day parade in Friday Harbor may have been a bit reduced by lack of updated information about a change in start time. A press release from the Town of Friday Harbor listed a 10 am start time. Later the Town asked the American Legion to change the start time to 11:30 am to avoid traffic from an off-loading ferry. Unfortunately a press release containing the new information was not sent out.
